Garmin Mapquest Discrepancy

by Bob Protzmann
(New City, Rockland Co, NY)

We have a GARMIN etrex unit which we use for providing GPS co-ordinates for local cemeteries. On a good day, the device gives us a stated sensitivity of 20 ft.

However, when we do a MapQuest search, using these co-ordinates, the locations are off by 1000 ft to 50 miles. When looking at Google Earth, co-ordinates similar to MapQuest are found for known locations, and are off by at least 10-20 sec (1000-2000 ft).

Does MapQuest use Google Earth data for its locations?

Which is correct, GARMIN, or MapQuest?

When using MapQuest and co-ordinates from others, on WebSites, such as those at Interment.net, the same problem exists. The co-ordinates don't match known locations on the Maps.

Anyone know what's going on here?

Are there any other systems such as mapQuest that provide maps based on co-ordinates, that are accurate?
