Just 'GPS' No Brand

by John Fidler
(Brisbane, Australia)

I purchased a cheap GPS from China three years ago with all the bells and whistles for $250 $AUD. It had a 4.3" touch screen, FM modulator, Bluetooth, SD card, could play MP3 and videos and had Route 66 maps installed.

It was a no-name brand just called "GPS." It worked well for 12 months then the internal battery gave out and you can't replace it and now it only works when its plugged in to the car. About the same time the touch screen became a bit dodge and often got stuck on a screen and wouldn't leave that screen until you turn off the GPS.

The Bluetooth did pair with some of my cell phones but the mic on the GPS was almost useless, I am sure that the person receiving the call could hear me yelling from the car rather than from the phone. The navigation instructions were so basic that I sometimes I did not know which turn to make.

One night I got so frustrated with it that I took it out of the cradle gave the screen a good punch and was about to throw it out the window, when I remembered that it had a good 2Gb SD card in it so I retrieved the card and dumped the GPS.

Since then I have used a Tom Tom to get around France and England unfortunately I did miss one turn and ended up in the Fatherland and I now know that GPS units do not work in the Black Forest if it is raining.

New No Name GPS NEW
by: John

That's good to hear Steven I hope you don't have any trouble in the future. I too have purchased a new GPS which is part of a 'in car unit', and includes a DVD player, radio, reversing camera, ipod, TV etc. This unit has everything and I am positive it would have maded it alot easier for NASA to land on the moon. You would think I would have learned from my first experience with these cheap no name bits of crap, but no the price gets me in every time. Having said that the GPS works great and uses 'IGO' software which is great. But the unit which is supposed to be designed for my car doesn't fit correctly and sits about 5mm proud of the dash board, it really looks out of place. The maker/distributer of this unit was very helpful with my installation problem right up to the point of doing anything, and when I requested some of the missing parts my emails failed to generate any further interest in China. Anyway aside from the installation problem everything seems to work for now. I am going to leave the unit in the car at this stage untill something stops working, or I can't stand the look of the thing.

My experience is different NEW
by: Steven

I have just got one of those units you described and it worked quite well for me. Not sure if the battery will go flat after 1 year but the guiding instructions are even better than Tom Tom - it tells me when I go over the speed limit. I can also input coordinates which I couldn't do with the Tom Tom Start model. Maybe your model was a few years back. My model has a 8GB card pre-loaded with world maps and delivered from Sydney. And it is only AUD$149 plus postage.
