My Secret for the Success of this Website?

Hello, my name is Jay Snively. I live near Dayton, Ohio with my wife, Ann, and two kitties, Myrrh and Tzilla. I spent most of my working life in the audio-visual field designing, installing, and repairing systems and equipment. A dream I've had for a long time was to be my own boss, working from home, earning a comfortable living, and most importantly, doing something I like to do. After 18 years in that 9 to 5, it seemed as if I never would realize that dream.

A blessing in disguise

One day at work I carelessly lifted a piece of furniture the wrong way. The "snap" I heard was my lower back. The injury put me out of work and on disability. Not being able to do much physical work, I tried several entrepreneurial ventures over a period of several years with little success. Still no dream.

But, as with many things in life, it happened gradually. I started an informational website. After a fair amount of work and the passage of a fair amount of time, I realized "this is it." This is the dream.

Doing what I like

I now work from home, part time, doing something fun. Oh, did I mention I get paid for it? Here's a short summary:

• I started in November of 2005 knowing nothing about building a website
• In June of 2008 I reached the $100 a day mark
• The income happens 7 days a week whether I work or not
• I get over 90,000 happy visitors a month - people that say things like...

"Your site is probably the best 'content' site I've ever visited. Clear, easy to navigate, and loaded with useful information about GPS systems, especially for people such as me who are trying to get up to speed on this technology."

An income of $100 a day is not a lot by some standards, but I now know what works - provide people on the Web with useful information and more and more people come. And with more people comes more money. It is clear that if I apply myself and spend more time doing what I have done, I will be able to increase that income significantly.

How I did it

I don't remember how it happened, but I came across a suite of tools called Site Build It! that helped me build a Web site. I did not know HTML (the code that makes Web sites) at the time but that was okay because I didn't need to know that with SBI! I could tell you more about SBI! but my point now is what it has done for my life.

I don't have a boss and I work from home, so there's no fighting rush hour traffic - I fill my car with fuel about once a month (and it's a gas hog)! I work when I want and that makes much of my life stress-free. About the most frustrating thing I deal with is a kitty by the name of Tzilla that insists on sitting in front of my monitor or on my keyboard.

How you can do it

All you need is to identify a few topics about which you know something or are passionate about. SBI! takes those ideas and helps you choose which would make the most profitable website. The concept is to become an info-publisher and give away information for free. People use SBI! to build sites on just about anything you can think of. There are sites on juggling, how to use your digital camera, free online piano lessons, and even dreadlocks, to name a few. See some of the sites that have grown out of other people's interests.

Don't think for a minute that you have nothing worth sharing. Everybody knows something or at least has a passion for something - and that's all that's needed. There's plenty of room on the Web for more information. You'd be surprised how many topics still lack good, thorough, and hype-free content. How many times have you searched the Web for information and could find nothing but sites trying to sell you something? And with today's fast-paced society and technological advances, new topics are being born all the time.

So how does this web site make money?

But if I'm giving information away for free, how do I make money? One way is to display a small amount of advertising on select pages. Another way is by being an affiliate. That's where you recommend a product or service and if a visitor to your site makes a purchase based on your recommendation, you get a commission. This site gets visited by 3000 people every day and a significant portion of those people take an action that provide me with an income.
