Navman Has Bad Cord

We enjoyed our Navman for about 2 years when all of a sudden the power would cut off in the middle of a trip (bad news, when you don't know where you are going). My husband deduced that the cord had to be in the unit just right or the GPS would turn off. Hit a rough place in the road and the power goes out.
We tried ordering a new cord but the only one we found cost as much as a Garmin. So guess what we did? A few months later my father in law (whom I told to get the Navman), called us from Fla. with the same problem. He now has another brand. Why is this such a problem? Actually two problems: 1) the cord going bad in the first place 2) finding a replacement cord for less than the cost of a new unit.
Thanks, Jan
