Useful but ... my Garmin Colorado 300

I have this year purchased a Garmin Colorado handheld GPS device. I love it. I have no sense of direction and find it very helpful. There are some buts though.
1. The unit came with a world base map which I gather means access to downloadable maps but it is not Apple mac compatible and I do not have a PC!!
2. Bought an SD Europe street map. A good buy with street level mapping and post code detail. This gives me the option of pedestrian or drivers routes I swap these around regularly according to need. But the routing function has given me more than a few problems! To locate the intersection of two major roads for example you seem to need a postcode? (to find the junction between the M1 and the A505 this does not make sense)
3. When finding a specific building it has to have a house number, there is no facility to enter a house name but here in the UK there are still many addresses that do not have a house number.
Well I'm still learning but sometimes a person who could help solve some riddles would be very welcome.
