Using Delorme Topo 6.0 with GPS

by Coldtexan

I presently use a laptop running Delorme Topo 6.0 and the Earthmate GPS receiver. This system has worked well for me and prior to the 6.0 version I used Topo 4.0 so I have used this system for quite some time.

I am still learning about the different uses of the software it is not really easy to understand even though I use it a lot. It is nice to have the large full color moving map on the laptop although the system can be rather clumsy in the car. I have spent a lot of time with the program and always try to pre-plan my routes as I frequently travel to places that I have never been previously. I also use the note attachment capability with that program to allow me to see places I may want to see or avoid. There is no voice feature in the program.

I have to take the laptop with me anyway but have considered something like a Garmin Nuvi 660 that is a little more portable and user friendly in the car. I am not sure I can download the routes from my laptop using the Delorme program to the Garmin and I am not sure I would like the maps that come on the Garmin as well as I do the Topo 6.0 maps.

Even with the shortcomings it might be better for me to purchase an ultra-portable laptop with a smaller screen. This would give me the ability to use the GPS capability and still have other computer functions. The price is not radically different from a top of the line GPS either.
