There are many types of free GPS software on the Internet. I've sorted through various lists to compile this source. I try to keep it up to date. If you know of any additions or corrections to be made, please let me know. This list is current as of May 5, 2008 and contains 221 listings.

Totally Free GPS Software3D Route Builder - lets you build or edit GPS routes in Google Earth with altitude and time-stamp information. Real-time playback is possible.3D Tracking - Using your mobile phone or PDA, along with your GPS receiver, you can record and view your movements in detail on Google Earth or Google Maps. You can even use the free service for live tracking using Google Earth or Google Maps. Download of the required 3dtracking application, as well as use of the website, is completely free (and there are no future plans to charge for this either). The web server also retains all the data you’ve ever recorded and submitted, so you can always go back and view your older recorded data at any time. 8Motions - is a mobile application, similar in some ways to Google Map, but providing different services. You can do what you are doing with Google Map mobile, but you can also browse and discover geolocalized content on your mobile.
Active GPX Route Player is an easy to use "media player" for GPS files. Load up to 50 tracks and play them all back at the same time synced or true time in Google Earth. A dashboard control gives detailed info on speed, distance, grade, heading, etc. and position is shown against elevation. amAze - is for the Java-enabled mobile phone, covering the US and 15 European countries. A sample of what it does: Visual and voice guidance to any destination; Search or define any location by its address; Search and navigate to businesses listed in yellow pages directories. APRS - APRS is free GPS software for use with packet radio by ham radio operators and non-hams alike. You can monitor, in real time, such information as the location of vehicles, current weather, and much more. Async & RINEX - Programs to log and use raw data from the following Garmin handheld receivers: GPS12, 12XL, II+, III+, Etrex, Emap BikeAtor (German) - for Motorola A780 - includes touchscreen support and offline raster maps. BlueGPS is a simple command line tool to download datalogs from the Royaltek RBT-3000 bluetooth GPS receiver under Linux. BSGPS and then navigate to BSGPS - Free GPS Software to run on Windows laptops. Full support as static maps(screen dumps )and Openstreetmap (completely copyright free) tile maps (moving). Record/playback journeys. Compass/Speedo. Points of interest ( fules/stores etc.) Speed cameras warnings. Buddy Locator - you can see what your friends are up to. You can locate both them and yourself on the map. And you can see their status just like on any messenger. Cetus GPS - Cetus GPS for Palm OS is the Swiss Army Knife of GPS tracking and field data collection. It is intended for use by GIS surveyors, scientists, explorers and GPS enthusiasts who need to extend the features of their standard GPS equipment. Clew - is a chart plotting program. Connect a GPS to your laptop, load some maps, and watch the dots crawl across the map as you drive, sail, etc. It currently works with maps scanned/photographed into the computer and any GPS with NMEA output. CotoGPS - for Palm OS. Displays position numerically and graphically, capture, calculate and draw distances, tracks and areas. Supports PalmOS 3.0 and up, PalmOS 5, including high resolution mode, HandEra 330 (high resolution, screen resizes), and all NMEA capable GPS devices. Cumulus - is a program for Qtopia and OPIE, aimed at the soaring community. Cumulus runs on Zaurus and iPaq hardware with a Linux OS. It provides a rich moving map display and all the information you need to easily navigate while requiering a minimum of user-interaction. It uses a NMEA compatible serial or CompactFlash GPS to provide it with information on the current position, altitude, heading and speed. DGPSIP - A system to send DGPS corrections over the Internet. DNR Garmin - Provides users the ability to directly transfer data between Garmin GPS handheld receivers and various GIS software packages. Earthcomber lets users specify types of restaurants, shops, ATMs, hotels, landmarks that it seeks and plots on a map. Just added: spots friends same way, with safety verification. Works with GPS or uses alt-GPS network positioning. Map and data coverage USA only. Supports iPhone, mobile browsers, Palm, Windows Mobile Pocket PC and Smartphone.
eGPSTrack - GPS/J2ME Mobile application for tracking and mountain routes. EveryTrail - is free GPS software that resides on EveryTrail's server. Upload your tracks and corresponding photos with automated geotagging and share with the community. flexGPS - FlexGPS enables the manipulation of maps used with a GPS Receiver. FoxyTag - A system that posts virtual tags close to speed cameras in order to warn the other drivers. G7ToWin - G7ToWin is free GPS software designed to exchange information between a PC and Garmin, Magellan, or Lowrance/Eagle GPS receivers. Gar2rnx - Gar2rnx allows you to receive coordinates and much more from some Garmin GPS units using undocumented commands. Garmap CE - Garmap CE runs on PCs or Pocket PCs running Windows CE 2.0 (and maybe later).
Garmap Win - Garmap Win is free GPS software that can be used with Garmin GPS receivers to manage waypoints, routes, and track logs. Some features are: download track logs, waypoints and routes from a Garmin GPS receiver; create and upload waypoints and routes to a Garmin GPS receiver; show current position on a map (BMP format); 124 map datums are supported.
GARNIX - GARNIX enables transfer of data between MS-DOS/Windows/Linux computers and a Garmin GPS receiver. GeoPDF Toolbar turns Adobe Reader into a geospatial application that gives users the ability to view, manipulate and update mapping data while leveraging Adobe collaboration capabilities to share information with others in the field and at home base. GeoSetter is a freeware tool for Windows for showing and changing geo data of image files (e.g. images taken by digital cameras). GEOsnapper geo-tags your photos to make them searchable by location. You can also categorize your images via keywords, albums or groups so that they can be found by people who are interested in the same things as you. GeoTours - On the Geovative Solutions website, you can use GeoTours to easily and quickly create GPS tours that can contain images, audio, and text associated with geographic locations. Once a tour is created, it can then be shared by its owner on the website and downloaded into a number of GPS and non-GPS devices such as numerous Garmin GPS devices, smartphones/PDAs, iPods, or Google Earth. GEOTracing is a software platform for creating multimedial geo-applications. These applications have in common that they allow you to tell your multimedial story about your movement through the landscape, whether on foot, skates, by bike or other means. GMAP is a Map editor for GPS maps that runs on linux. It reads GPX, KML and .mp files and writes .mp polish map format files suitable for compiling using the free cgpsmapper compiler. Gnomad GPS Street Map Viewer for Linux. Gnomad is a mapping tools for Open Systems and GPS's with open specs. Google Navigator - For the Pocket PC. GooPs is a companion to Google Earth that shows you where you are in real-time. GPicSync - automatically inserts location in your photos metadata so they can also be used with any 'geocode aware' application like Picasa/Google Earth, Flickr, loc.alize.us, etc. GPilotS - GPilotS allows your PalmPilot to transfer waypoints, routes, and tracks to and from selected Garmin receivers. It can communicate with map applications to exchange waypoints, routes, and tracks. GPS3D - GPS3D is a suite of free GPS software utilities to control a handheld GPS receiver from your PC and see the result in 3D. If you don't have a GPS receiver you can use GPS3D to see MapBlast maps in 3D and also interact with a 3D representation of Earth. GPS3d - is a small application that displays a texture-mapped earth and lets you interactively explore it in 3D. It can also connect to a GPS unit and display in 3D all the info produced by the unit. GPS4PPC - GPS4PPC is an open source application, written with Basic4ppc. It includes several tools for working with maps and with GPS devices. GpsActionReplay (GpsAR) is software that enables replays and performance analysis from GPS data, incuding "real time" animation with several tracks, auto-focusing, a time-based controller, auto speed calculation and auto data send (it will send your speed results to whatever server that accepts them, such as (www.gps-speedsurfing.com). It is able to download tracks directly from the GPS without the need of a secondary program such as G7towin. It's a Java application that can be run on any system (including Windows, Linux, Mac), and on any Web browser within an applet (the Java Plug-In must be installed).
GPSCommunicator visually represent NMEA GPS position data in realtime. It works with NMEA 0183 GPS receivers connected via a serial port. GPS Cookie is companion software to A2B. A2B is a website where you can search for websites related to any place on Earth.
GPSd - is a service daemon that monitors one or more GPSes attached to a host computer through serial or USB ports, making all data on the location/course/velocity of the sensors available to be queried on TCP port 2947 of the host computer.
GPSDiag - GPSDiag is free GPS software for 32-bit Microsoft Windows platforms (Windows 95, 98, ME, NT & 2000) to monitor incoming NMEA GPS messages from a serial port. GPSdings - is a java 1.5 command line tool for the manipulation and analysis of track and waypoint data recorded with a gps receiver. GpsDrive - is a car (bike, ship, plane) navigation system. GpsDrive displays your position provided from your GPS receiver on a zoomable map. The maps are autoselected for best resolution depending of your position and can be downloaded from the Internet. GPSed - is a location-based service for trip tracking from mobile. In real time tracks are traced on Google maps and stored in an online archive. With a simple geotagging feature it is possible to pin photos to a map precisely at a place they were taken. GPSExplorer - is a program for communicating with Garmin GPS units and is easily extended with a plugin functionality. GPSGO - is the international version of GPSMap-OS, using geographic coordinate calibration so that it works with map images from any source. GPSion5 - GPSion5 allows a Psion 5mx to communicate with a Magellan 315/320. GPSMan - GPSMan (GPS Manager) makes for easy and flexible manipulation of GPS data. It allows data transfer and real-time logging for Garmin, Magellan, and Lowrance units. GPSMap-OS - is a small freeware Pocket PC application that reads Global Positioning System information from NMEA-compatible receivers and plots current and historical position over user-supplied map images in British OSGB format (as used for most maps published by the Ordnance Survey in the UK). GPSMonitor is a Windows application (using .NET 3.5 runtime) which decodes NMEA strings that come in via a serial connection, and translates them into human readable form, including graphs of satellite azimuth and elevation over time, tabs for several different NMEA strings, and a Google Maps interface. GPSPhotoLinker - can be used to save location and GPS position data to a photo. The latitude and longitude recorded by your GPS unit while you were taking photos can be linked, and saved, to the photos. GPSPhotoLinker automatically enters the city, state, and country annotations into the metadata. GPSS - Run GPSS on your PC and it will give impressive in-car navigation and remote tracking demonstrations. Run on a Laptop with a GPS, and this same GPS Software will work for real. Get free registration, mapping for 155 countries and voice guidance in 12 languages. This includes free street level mapping for all the USA. GPSTk - provides both fundamental and advanced GPS processing algorithms. A wide array of functions are provided by the library, notably RINEX I/O, ephemeris calculation, atmospheric refraction models, and positioning algorithms. GPS Track - connects to a GPS and records the path that you travel. Tracks can be uploaded to a web site, sent by email, transferred via Bluetooth, or written to a flash memory card. Google Maps and Google Earth are used to view the tracks. File formats such as GPX and CSV are also supported. GPS Tracker - allows someone to track a GPS enabled cell phone using Google maps. GPS TrackMaker - Free GPS software for PC with Microsoft Windows 95 or higher. It creates, edits and deletes tracklogs, routes and waypoints. It has a database with more than 280 different datums and calculates length, instantaneous and average speeds in tracklogs. You can have total navigation on the map image. GPS TrackMaker makes possible the communication between PC and GPS and does much more. GPS Trail Browser lets you view both the maps and web links contained in an internet map by providing both web browser and a map viewer tabs. In the map viewer, use the internet tool to open web pages and photographs linked to places in the web browser. GPStrans - GPStrans enables waypoint, track, and route information to be exchanged with a Garmin receiver. GPSUTIL - is a program to communicate with a GPS unit. It supports several NMEA (National Marine Electronics Association) v2.1 messages. GPSUTIL also supports downloading, uploading, and deleting waypoints from a Magellan GPS. GPS Utility - GPS Utility is an easy-to-use application that provides management, manipulation and mapping of GPS information. You can use it to transfer data to/from a GPS receiver and many other software applications. It is particularly useful for dealing with data in different file formats, datums and grid coordinate systems. GPS Viewer - shows the time, the current location, the speed, and the moving direction on the display of the mobile phone and runs on all phones, which at least support CLDC 1.0 and MIDP 2.0 and which allow access to Bluetooth (JSR 82) or the serial interface (data cable). GPS Visualizer is a free on-line utility that creates SVG & JPEG maps and profiles from GPS data (tracks and waypoints), street addresses, or simple coordinates. Use it to see where you've been, plan where you're going, or visualize geographic data (business locations, events, customers, real estate, etc.). GPSylon is able to show maps downloaded from the expedia map servers. It may connect to a gps device and track your position on the maps. At the moment, it is able to read gpsdata in the NMEA standard from a serial gps device, a file or a gps daemon across a network. GPX2SHP converts GPS or GPX file to ESRI Shape file. Grazer - writes GPS-GeoData into the Exif-Information of digital pictures. The tagging is done automatically. Only the time on the digital camera needs to be set correctly.
Happy Camel - is intended to combine your digital camera with your GPS device. If you feed it a list of digital photos and a tracklog, it figures out where these images were taken. It can embed this position in the EXIF-data of your photos and create a .KMZ file for Google Earth or Google Maps displaying your photos at the right positions along the tracklog. iGKeys - Hotkeys for iNav iGuidance. iGkeys simplifies the usage of iNav iGuidance on laptops. Kashmir 3D - Kashmir 3D is a program to allow 3D navigation with a GPS device. It also creates landscapes and 3D maps. J2ME Map - is an interface to GoogleMaps. JPGParseGPS - A Windows DOS/Console application to parse a directory of JPG files displaying their lat/long values, and optionally: Converts Lat/Long to OSGB Grid position; Displays the date and time the photograph was taken; Creates a GPX way point file. Karto - allows you to calibrate a scanned map with some known geo-points (Lambert, UTM, etc.) (French). LaserMap - LaserMap is a mobile GPS/mapping solution for navigation for Windows CE. Le Petit Poucet - is free software to display and edit GPS routes and tracks in a 3D scene. Le Petit Poucet is targeted at explorers, discoverers, and trekkers. Livecontacts - is free GPS software for Symbian smartphones (Nokia N95 like devices) and Windows Mobile PDA's. Check in your GPS coordinates by mobile phone and let your friends know where you are. Loadstone GPS - Free satellite navigation software developed for Symbian Mobile/phones using the Series60 platform. Although Loadstone-GPS is a useful navigational tool for everyone, it is particularly useful for blind and visually impaired people using screen readers such as Talks and Mobile Speak. LocateA - offers live vehicle tracking locating the live positions of moving objects, whether they be cars, vans, trucks, people, smart phones, or PDAs. LocEight - allows users to upload their GPS data, add photos, tracks and POIs, and publish it all on Google Internet maps or output it in GPX or KML format. All LocEight records are freely searchable from the Internet. locr - is geotagging software. Maemo Mapper - is geographical mapping softare specifically designed for the Maemo platform and the Nokia 770 form factor. MAPEAR - Free Garmin maps for Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and South Brazil. En Español. MapEditor - manipulate and postprocess the tracks generated by the NavSys system and generate street maps of the area you've been driving through. MapItPronto - You can use this tool to Upload/View GPS Routes and plot as well as planning a future route. Uploading your GPS route allows you to see it on google maps with statistics such as average speed, ascent, descent, max speed. You can then enable graphs including elevation, speed, and heart rate. Map Maker - Free map editor and viewer. Gives students and novice users the opportunity to learn the basics of map making and GIS. Gratis can also be used to distribute map projects and data. Add maps to Google Earth. MapMan - A map generating tool designed primarily for owners of Garmin GPS devices with mapping capability. However owners of other brand devices, devices without mapping, or even those who don’t own a GPS at all, may be able to make use of some of the features. Map Mobile Navigator (MapNav) - An application for Java2ME-enabled mobile phones and PDAs. Mapview - is a viewer for Terraserver tiles. It downloads them on-demand and interactively, and lets you overlay a GPS track and edit it. MapWelt - is a moving map program for PocketPCs and Smartphones with Windows Mobile. It can read a GPS signal and display the position on a map. Marengo GPS Route Planner - is based on Google maps and is designed specifically to allow users to crate GPX route files for upload to a GPS unit. MGPS - is free GPS software designed to visualize and edit GPS data. Main features: displays track and waypoint data; displays scanned, calibrated raster maps as background; displays vector maps; 3D display of airspace data; analyze track data (speed, course in a given point etc.); based on the timestamps in digital photographs (from digital cameras) and the track timestamp, the software determines and displays where each individual picture was taken. Mobile GMaps - displays Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps, Windows Live Local (MSN Virtual Earth) and Ask.com Maps and satellite imagery on Java J2ME-enabled mobile phones, PDAs and other devices. MGMaps can connect to a GPS receiver over bluetooth or use internal GPS features on some phones in order to automatically display the map for your current position. MobiRunner can act as as stopwatch/running watch and together with a GPS it can show distance, lap time, speed etc... The website is in Danish but the program is in English. Mologogo - Not only free software but also a free service that will track a friends GPS enabled cell phone from another phone or on the web. It currently works on pretty much any Nextel phone with Java, GPS and a data plan. It also supports Windows Mobile 5.0 and will shortly have clients for Windows and Windows Smartphone as well. Moving Map - This app requires either an external Bluetooth GPS or an inbuilt GPS (for example as in the BlackBerry 8800 or the Nokia N95) and provides moving map functionality. My Tracking - Vehicle tracking for small business and personal use. Works on iDen phones, Windows Mobile PocketPC and smartPhones, and Nokia. Free for personal use. Nav4All - Navigation software for GPS and cell phone. According to their website, Nav4All is free until January 1, 2010. The anticipated monthly fee will vary between € 0.50 and € 2.00 and free subscriptions will also be available. NavFun - for Nokia - have all the goodies of Google Maps and Google Earth on your mobile. NaviExpert - (Polish) Navigami - for java mobile phones - navigation software for offline navigation and vector maps of all countries of the world. Navit - is a car navigation system with routing engine. It's modular design is capable of using vector maps of various formats for routing and rendering of the displayed map. It's even possible to use multiple maps at a time. Navizon - is a wireless positioning system that triangulates signals broadcasted from Wi-Fi access points and Cellular towers to help the users find their way in most major metropolitan areas worldwide. Navlet - is a navigation system for mobile devices (PDAs, smartphones, cell phones, etc.). It gets the positioning data from any NMEA capable GPS receiver and displays the position on a digital map. External GPS receivers can be connected via a serial cable or via Bluetooth. If your mobile device is connected to the Internet, Navlet can download maps from a map server, otherwise locally stored maps can be used. NavSys - is a combined media player / GPS navigation application to be used in a vehicle. Net::Friends - allows for the reporting to and querying of GPSDrive-style friendsd servers. The friendsd server use simple UDP messages to update and report the most recent known position, speed, and direction of people and things. NDWGeoTag - This is the Windows version of the two Dos/Console programs GeoTagGpx and JPGParseGPS combined. NMEASleuth - allows you to inspect NMEA data streams from devices connected via a serial port. NMEA Compass - A skinnable compass which uses SiRF or NMEA0183 data from your GPS NMEAP - is an extensible parser for NMEA-0183 (GPS) data, written in portable C. Nokia Sports Tracker - is a GPS based activity tracker that runs on S60 smartphones. Information such as speed, distance and time are automatically stored to your training diary. To be able to use application for real, you need Nokia S60 3.0 or 3.1 phone with Bluetooth GPS device or Nokia S60 3.0 or 3.1 phone with integrated GPS. NPGPX - is a Qt-based Netscape plugin that displays GPX files (GPS eXchange) with waypoints, routes, and tracks embedded in a webpage, with optional background maps. O2PosTrack - is a console based C++ application for retrieving position information from a mobile phone as provided by the (German) O2 mobile phone company. ODGPS - is a program for Pocket PCs that lets you navigate in any terrain using GPS. It is intended to be small and light and easy to use. Odgps now runs on all sorts of pocket pcs running pocket PC 2003 and higher and with all sorts of GPS devices. OmniKML - Program to transfer NMEA files to Google Earth (this is a direct download link for a zip file). The site's home page is OmniSTAR. OpenDMTP - Open Device Monitoring and Tracking Protocol - is a protocol and framework that allows bi-directional data communications between servers and devices (clients) over the Internet and similar networks. OpenDMTP is particularly geared towards Location-based information (LBS) such as GPS, as well as temperature and other data collected in remote-monitoring devices. OpenGTS - open source project designed specifically to provide web-based GPS tracking services for a "fleet" of vehicles. OpenTom MP3 Player - So what to do with your precious TomTom GO while you're cruising the neighbourhood at home? No need for navigation - you know the streets by heart. Well, this is the perfect time for some serious rock: The OpenTom MP3 Player. Install on a spare SD card and play all your favorite tunes OziToGoogleEarth - converts OziExplorer track or waypoint files to "kml" files which can be read by Google Earth. It will also download Garmin track files for display on GoogleEarth. PerDiemCo Location & Tracking (PLT) - allows you to track your trip and lets others locate and follow you online. You set the passcodes so only those that you want can see your trip. PLT offers privacy and 'a need to know', so you can turn off anyone's ability to locate you at anytime. PLT allows you to access and use your GPS on-the-fly from any location connected to the Internet. For Windows® Mobile PDA or Phone PocketGPS-Map - views calibrated bitmap maps (moving maps) on PocketPC/WinCE platform. Additionaly it supports using GPS device to retrieve user position and show it (with other marks) in map - making it very handy for geocaching. Position - is a GNUstep GPS navigator. It requires a GPS receiver that knows the NMEA protocol. PyGarmin - PyGarmin is a set of Python classes which implement the protocol used by Garmin GPS receivers to talk to each other and to other machines. It is based on the official protocol specification. PyGPS - records a track, records notes, shows you satellites, shows you your position, shows you on a map. Runs on any machine which supports Python, pygtk, and libglade. PyTrainer - is a tool to log your sport activities. This software is originally programed for cyclist but it can be used for another type of sportman resistance like runners, swimmers, skiers, mountain bikers, etc... Pytrainer works with your GPS fitness device and it is be able to generate detailed graphics and statistics with your gps data. qpeGPS - is a program for displaying a moving map centered at the position read from a GPS device. It's an open source project aimed at users of Linux PDA's. Reperion/PocketReperion - send your GPS location to the Reperion/Pocket Reperion server, which in turn will present your location, track, pictures and audio via a web interface. People can use this interface to track position, and send and receive text and audio messages as well. RINEX & Async - Is free GPS software to log and use raw data from the following Garmin handheld receivers: GPS12, 12XL, II+, III+, Etrex, Emap.
RoadMap - is an open source (GPL) program that provides a car navigation for Linux, UNIX and now Windows CE (a.k.a. PocketPC). It displays a map of the streets, tracks the position provided by a NMEA-compliant GPS receiver, identifies the street matching this GPS position and announces the name of the crossing street at the next intersection.
RoadNav - is an in-car navigation system capable of running on a variety of operating systems, including Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X. Roadnav can obtain a car's present location from a GPS unit, plot street maps of the area, and provide verbal turn by turn directions to any location in the USA. SeaClear - SeaClear is a PC based chart plotter for Windows 2000/XP/NT/95/98/ME. With a GPS connected it displays the current position, speed, heading and other data on the screen. The chart is repositioned and new charts are loaded automatically as needed. You can save tracks to be viewed later and you can manually and automatically enter log book entries. The number of waypoints and routes that can be entered are unlimited. The screen area for charts is maximized with most functions accessed with the right mouse button. Zooming is provided with support for IntelliMouse wheel. SeaClear is created for nautical navigation but can probably be used for other navigation needs. Smart2go - is a compact program for your mobile that allows you to load maps from around the world. Software-On-Board (SOB) - is a PC-based navigation program which, when loaded with C-MAP charts and connected to a GPS gives real-time on-screen chart positioning and details such as speed and heading. S&T Keys - Hotkeys for Microsoft Streets & Trips. S&T Keys simplifies the usage of Microsoft Streets & Trips for GPS navigation use. TDCGPS - TDCGPS allows GPS data to be used to mark your position on a map. It works with the Psion 3a to read NMEA information from Rockwell and other units. TinyGPX - processes GPX files from geocaching.com and outputs super-compact HTML file with the essential cache information. This allows you to print out sheets to take with you on the trail that can fit 10-15 caches worth of information per page instead of just one. TopoShare - For use in North America - This site makes it possible to create, store and share routes and tracks using gpx. You can upload GPS tracks to a personal acount and share them with the rest of the world. You can trace routes on a map, extract a terrain profile and export it to your GPS device.
