Plot Coordinates on a Map

A little-known MapQuest tool – enter latitude and longitude coordinates and have that location plotted on a map.

Note on entering coordinates: A minus sign preceeding the value indicates the Southern Hemisphere for Latitude and the Western Hemisphere for Longitude.

World Place-Name Locator

Enter a city or town name and get coordinates. Easier and quicker than below but fewer locations in the database (250,000).

World Distance Finder

Results provided by the U.S. Census Bureau

This service uses data from the US Census and a supplementary list of cities around the world to find the latitude and longitude of two places, and then calculates the distance between them (as the crow flies).

Historical World Boundary Maps

Results provided by the randymajors.com and Google Maps

  1. Type a PRESENT-day Place and a HISTORICAL Year as early as 2000 BC, then hit the “Go!” button. The place you type must be a PRESENT-day city and country; or a present-day address or road name* with city and country. The year must be from 2000 BC through 2008 AD (use negative years for BC, such as -200 for 200 BC).
  2. Once you see country boundaries, click inside any country to see its name and details. The information window that appears lists the country name and the timeframe the boundaries were in effect; additionally, for the years 1946 through 2008, the capital is also shown. Click the < and > buttons next to the Year input box to go back and forward a decade at a time.

Historical County Boundary Maps – BETA

  1. The year can be from the mid-1600s (depending on date of state formation) through the year 2000.
  2. Once you see county boundaries, click inside any county to see its name and details. The information window that appears lists the county name and when that county’s then-current boundaries (as of the year you typed) went into effect. Click the < and > buttons next to the Year input box to go back and forward a decade at a time.
